Subject:Lookin' through telescopes
Time:12:15 pm

Hey DPers!

So...I live in inner SE and I really miss being able to see millions of stars at night when I look up...and I love learning about planets and space and shit. What kind of groups are out there that will let me join them and look through their telescopes and ask all sorts of dumb newbie questions? Anyone know? Anyone here a part of a group or club?

Hope you're all staying cool today.

So here's the setup:

I installed a wireless system in the community my parents live in. Main router 192.168.1.1. Main broadcast antenna access point 192.168.1.200
My parents receiving access point 192.168.1.205

Their internal router is receiving an IP of 192.168.1.50. Their internal network is set to 192.168.20.1.

They can ping their access point (192.168.1.205) successfully, but when they attempt to ping the main broadcast AP (192.168.1.200), they receive back from 192.168.1.50 that the destination host is unreachable. It's not statically set however so the fact that it has an IP address means that it has been in communication with the main 192.168.1.1.

I'm thinking it was in communciation recently but something has just interrupted the communication? I've had them unplug their router with no change.

Ideas? I am neck deep in trying to figure out a problem with access points at work that I can't seem to point my brain at this correctly.

[Netherlands] Sex change op boosts heart disease risk

DutchNews.nl, Netherlands
Sex change op boosts heart disease risk

Friday 17 July 2009

Female transsexuals (who are born as men) have a greater chance of dying of coronary heart and artery disease and strokes, researchers at the VU and Leiden university teaching hospitals told Friday's Volkskrant.

The researchers followed 1,300 transexuals treated at the VU hospital between 1975 and 2004.

Male transsexuals, who are born as women, did not show a higher risk of developing heart disease.

The research indicates that giving female hormones to men is more dangerous than the other way round, the paper said.

VU professor Louis Gooren, who headed the research project, told the paper he was shocked by the results. Two earlier studies did not reveal any negative health effects because the follow-up period was not long enough, he said.

Endocrinologist Henk Asscheman told the paper the higher risk may be associated with the female hormone ethinylestradiol which the VU no longer prescribes.

But some transsexuals continue to take the hormone without hospital supervision, the paper says. The high proportion of smokers among transsexuals may be an added factor.

Subject:Job hunting? It's scary out there.
Time:11:47 am
I just saw a job posted this morning for a Receptionist, $10/hr, with this qualification:

Candidate Requirements:
Bachelors degree and approximately 1-3 years of professional office experience.

*rant*
THIS is what we're all up against!  These are the things we need to be telling people that think they can move here and pick up a job.

A receptionist for $10 needs a bachelors degree?  Why not?  There are enough people out their with degrees that are bussing tables.
Reality like this is so very depressing.

*deep breath*
Back to job-hunting :-)

The racist horrorshow that is Pam's House Blend continues, as they talk some more about how black people are homophobic (but say little-to-nothing about racism in the LGB(t) community).

Particularly galling is yet another case of Autumn Sandeen attempting to be a moderator, in this thread.

First, Narra spews forth some typical-for-the-blend racist white gay resentment against dem negroes:

Whatever you do, don't trust anyone LGBT.

It was obviously a big mistake to try to win support from a key minority group like the black community by appealing to them with our LGBT struggles and being so rude and ridiculous as to assert that our struggle is ANYTHING like the black struggle. Clearly it was wrong headed and we have now been set straight by the black community leaders who would never concede any similarities exist because it would *gasp* align our two communities in a highly uncomfortable way......The black community does not want to be dragged down into the nasty LGBT struggle as they have (especially the Christians) risen up as high as ever before in this country and don't want to screw that up now by associating with us losers. And whatever they do, they will definitely not be trusting any LGBT POC to tell them ANYTHING about what being gay is like or how understanding more about it might lead to at least some empathy, if not outright votes in our favor.

So, thanks again for taking us impudent, white, high class, shiny, clueless gay folk and putting us in our place. End of story. No further discussion needed at this time.

Kevin Erickson replies:

Um...

Clearly you did not read the article. The author is an LGBT POC. His principle concern is the lack of understanding among LGBT folks about what a civil rights movement really looks like.

...and then this guy Michael Bedwell inexplicably goes off not on the author of the article being discussed, but on Bilerico's blogger, Alex Blaze:

PUHLEEZE

Little Alex @ Bilerico claims to be Latino but, if his dorky picture is any indication, he passes for white quite well, thank you.

What he doesn't pass for is the objective intellectual he thinks he is. Quoting him on anything is like quoting Pee Wee Herman on nuclear physics.

kukito, a Latino, responds angrily to the racism:

a moron is a moron is a moron

and Michael Bedwell is obviously in the front of that line. Latinos, like LGBT persons, can be black, white, yellow, red, or any combination of those. We don't need to "pass" for anything. Pee Wee Herman is probably much more intelligent than Bedwell, judging from his moronic comment.

...and the folks at the Blend clutch their pearls in shock, for someone has said something mean!

And so of course, Autumn comes along, and threatens kukito with banning, while simultaneously saying nothing about Bedwell. She's even got a cute little graphic to further make it clear that the racist, anti-Latina/o bullshit Bedwell posted was okay but a Latino person responding to that insult is not okay:

Personal Foul! Ad Hominem/Personal Attacks against fellow Blenders are Not Okay! The trap door opens next time.

Bedwell goes on to defend himself with yet more racist language, including continued attacks on Alex Blaze's ethnicity:

For anyone confused, my point was, when I thought that kevinerickson was trying to certify the superior credibility of Alex Blaze [rather than Granderson] because he's supposedly an "LGBT POC" was that, based on his photo [and name] alone no one would discriminate against him on the basis of his being "POC" because he didn't display any of the typical external cues to bigots.

If Granderson is an "LGBT POC" that doesn't a priori make him intelligent, insightful, or right...any more than it does the professional lesbian race card shark Jasmyne Cannick.

And this is not remarked upon by Autumn at all.

Because racism is okay at the Blend, but calling out racists for their racism? That's a personal attack and Autumn will getcha for it!

Update: I forgot to add, "a moron is a moron is a moron" is simply kukito echoing back Bedwell's own words. He also wrote this stuff:

The bottomline is that Granderson is playing the race card simply to defend Obama not on substance but because he's black [actually biracial but....]. AKA judging him "not by the content of his character but by the color of his skin." Somewhere Jasmyne Cannick is having a rare multiple orgasm.

"Playing the race card," check! "The black man is defending Obama because they're both black," check! "Obama isn't really black, he's biracial," check! Gratuitous quoting of MLK, check! Derogatory references to a lesbian based on her sexuality, check!

And none of this gets a whistle blown by Autumn Sandeen.

Since there's a thread for the PS3 version, I thought one for the 360 would be good too. Anyone play? I'm happy to throw down online for anyone who would be interested, tag is WingGT1, primarily play as Jin and try not to be totally cheap with him.

Hello folks  :) :)

I have been following this community for a few months now and thought it was time to introduce myself.

My name is Stacy, I am 24 years old and I identify as a lesbian.  I am dating a wonderful FTM and we just moved in together.  He has identified as trans as long as he can remember, but is yet to actually start transitioning.  We are hoping to start saving money real soon so that he can get his top surgery next year...  It's a big expense but it is right on top of our list of priorities.  (no pun intended...)

I feel like I have had to do a bit of my own transitioning with my sexuality because it can be complicated to be a lesbian with a boyfriend  :)  I have gotten to the point where I just accept myself, and I accept him and if it confuses other people that is their problem.  Mostly he just teases me for being a terrible lesbian-- what can I say?  It's true lol.

I have enjoyed getting to "know" each of you and I look forward to continued interaction.

Just for kicks, here is a picture of us:

I was wondering if anyone hear has re-applied for a American Passport via post to LONDON. Because i am having trouble figuring out the fees part on the website. They say they want an interenational money order. But there are two you can get one from the bank and maybe from postoffice..

Can anyone shed any light on this. i have emailed them but I just wanted to see if someone else has gone through this process and what they did.

Thank you

Subject:NE Sunday Parkways! This Sunday! EDIT: Now with a video!
Time:10:04 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] excited
Psst: I put a short video on the end of the post, if you really want to see what Sunday Parkways is about.

Sunday Parkways is a 6.6 mile loop of streets and parks (this time in NE) that are closed to car traffic (except for people who live there, and a few intersections so people can get through the loop). The entire loop feels like one big park! People walk, jog, bicycle, roller-blade, you name it. Residents on the loop have parties or yard sales or lemonade stands. The parks have all kinds of activities and music and food! You can rent a bike if you don't have one so you can ride the loop.

The energy is beautiful and amazing. There's all sorts of people out there: adults, kids, whole families!

Here's the official website, with an explanation of the idea, and pictures and videos of other Sunday Parkways, both in Portland and around the world. If you go to the specific page for northeast, you can see what's going on at all the different parks.

My boyfriend and I are "intersection superheroes" near Fernhill Park from 8:30 to 11:30. Woo! Say hi if you see me, I'll have on a dress (with the volunteer tshirt over it) that's white and covered in black hearts, crowns, and musical notes.

The map!

Video!!

Time:09:18 am
I think my vacuum cleaner died. I had the belts replaced a little under a year ago, but suddenly it's making a tremendous noise. It's the only vac I ever bought - 18 years old. I'll take it over to my local sew & vac shop, but if it's not fixable, I'll have to shop for a new one.

Anyone go through this recently & have a suggestion? Or have access to a consumer reports vacuum issue?

Portland related because portlanders are such neat-freaks (I clean my house every other month whether it needs it or not!)

Does such a thing exist in Portland?

I've applied for a position within the NHS. They will be carrying out a CRB check, but I haven't lived in the UK for 5 years - just one year short! I'm from the US, here on a marriage visa - on my IRL. Do I need a certificate of good conduct? I've looked on the website, and The US isn't on the list of countries outside the UK.

If I do need one, does anyone know the cost? What about the length of time it takes to get?

I've had a look online and can't find anything. :(
